What a wonderful day filled with fun and excitement at Mary Snow School! We kicked off our PBIS celebration with a lot of fun! Students participated in a Rock, Paper, Scissors Showdown: Our top and bottom floors competed in an epic Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament! The highlight of the day? Students drawn from the PBIS tickets got the chance to pie their favorite teachers! Thank you to everyone who made this day possible! #WeAreBangor

The Bangor School Department is proud to celebrate Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day. Mary Sophia Snow was born in Bangor in 1857. She began her career as a teacher in the Bangor schools and while teaching became the first woman president of the Maine Teachers' Association. After leaving teaching for a career in business, she was elected to the Bangor School Board. Eventually, she would be named the system's superintendent.
She spent 11 years as Superintendent of Schools. In that time she opened Maine's first "normal training school" where new teachers learned the practical, day-to-day skills necessary to be a professional teacher.
Mary Snow was also elected president of the New England Superintendents' Association--and was the first woman to do so. Later, the University of Maine bestowed a master's degree in philosophy upon her.
Eventually she left Bangor for positions in New York City and then Chicago. She returned to New York City, where she died in 1924. In 1926, a new school on Broadway was named after her. Today we celebrate 100 years of the Mary Snow School.
