Library
Mary Snow Library supports the mission of the Bangor School Department: academic excellence for all!
The Mary Snow Library supports the school’s effort to build a culture of readers.
Students receive weekly library skills instruction and have many opportunities to explore books that satisfy their interests.
Teachers work collaboratively with the librarian to support instructional themes across the curriculum. Books carts are often created to support instruction and supply students with non-fiction sources to support research initiatives and build informational skills.
Atriuum Online Catalog All students have access to Atriuum, our library’s online catalog. Each student has been given their Patron ID which allows them to view their library accounts, and place books on hold. Atriuum is available anywhere students can access the Internet!
Digital Maine Library THE source for multiple online databases is now new and improved. For best results choose “Middle School” as the audience.
Maine Student Book Award List Visit the MSBA site to see the list of nominees for the current school year. All students who have read or listened to three or more books from the list are eligible to vote for their favorite book in late March!
NEWBERY AWARDS The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children’s book published the previous year. On June 22, 1921, Frederic G. Melcher proposed the award to the American Library Association meeting of the Children’s Librarians’ Section and suggested that it be named for the eighteenth-century English bookseller John Newbery. The idea was enthusiastically accepted by the children’s librarians, and Melcher’s official proposal was approved by the ALA Executive Board in 1922.
LUPINE AWARDS Since 1989 the Lupine Award has been presented annually by the Youth Services Section Interest Group of the Maine Library Association. In 1993 the committee was given the option of choosing honor books and the following year the Lupine Seal was created. In 2005 at the annual meeting of YSS, it was decided to split the award into two categories; Picture Book and Juvenile/Young Adult. One winner and one honor may be chosen in each category. The Lupine Award is designed to honor a living author or illustrator who is a resident of Maine, or who has created a work whose focus is Maine, as shown through the work’s characterization, plot or setting.
CALDECOTT MEDAL The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
